Austin Lunn’s journey carried Panopticon from the urban density of Louisville to the remote northern reaches of Minnesota. It is here, surrounded by a landscape both inspiring and endangered, that “Det hjemsøkte hjertet” took shape. The album follows an elder hermit in the final week of his life, interweaving childhood memories with a lament for an ecosystem transformed by modern encroachment.
Dense, atmospheric, and unmistakably cinematic, “Det hjemsøkte hjertet” (‘The Haunted Heart’) shifts from the icy aggression of earlier works into something richer and more saturated – a palette of purples and burning oranges fading into dusk. The folk instrumentation once associated with Panopticon has largely receded, giving way to tones reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse.
The metal foundation remains, but the record’s strength lies in composition rather than speed: layered arrangements, long-form dynamics, and a strong narrative undercurrent. A full orchestral presence runs throughout, with Charlie Anderson’s string performances adding both gravity and movement. Each song features a different guest vocalist – Aaron Charles (Falls Of Rauros, Rhun), Jan Evan Åsli (Vemod), and Jan 'Winterherz' Van Berlekom (Waldgeflüster) among them – introducing distinct colours without compromising cohesion.
At heart, “Det hjemsøkte hjertet” is an elegy: for wilderness altered beyond recognition, for childhood memories fading into myth, and for a life spent in quiet communion with a world slipping away. Described by Austin Lunn as ‘Northwoods Americana’ or ‘outdoor country’, it offers a raw and intimate reflection on loss, change, and the quiet strength of human connection.

Written alongside “...And Again into the Light” (2021), this companion piece trades distortion for acoustic resonance – banjo, mandolin, resonator guitar, and twin violins painting a soundscape steeped in frost, memory, and resilience. While the palette is gentler, the themes remain no less weighty: the burden of regret, the passage of time, and the quiet act of holding on – not for oneself, but for those who remind us of our worth.

From the quiet desolation of earlier Iterum Nata now rises something heavier – more aggressive and defiant. With “Heartwood”, Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jesse Heikkinen (The Abbey, Henget, ex-Hexvessel) reshapes his progressive rock and neo-folk foundations through the crucible of metal, layering doom-laden riffs and blackened textures upon the project’s introspective core.

To give this vision its pulse, Heikkinen enlisted Ukrainian drummer Yurii Ciel (Stoned Jesus, Cailleach Calling, ex-White Ward), whose expressive performance transforms “Heartwood” into the most visceral Iterum Nata release to date. Together they carve a sound both expansive and immediate: progressive journeys steeped in folk atmosphere, driven by the weight and force of metal.
The record also features rare guest appearances: King Dude lends his commanding voice to “Forgiveness Undone”, Alexander Kuoppala (ex-Children of Bodom) unleashes a searing solo in “I Have Been Sacrificed”, and Sami Hynninen (Reverend Bizarre) delivers an unearthly vocal in “Only Ash and Bones Remain”.

Deep in the Swedish hinterlands, Änterbila have forged “Avart” (‘Aberration’) – a blackened folk metal descent into the darker currents of national folklore. If their debut opened the door to a world of superstition, “Avart” strides further inside, told not from the perspective of the wandering listener but through the eyes of the adversary.
Here dwell the outcasts and the damned: the murderer fated long before the act, the smith whose forge burns with otherworldly fire, the troll king ruling unseen, the man cursed to live and die as the ulv. The stories are told without compromise, the music captured in stark immediacy – recorded with almost no retakes, shaped collectively yet still guided by the band’s founding vision.
The sound shifts between the unruly and the enchanted – riffs caked in grime, melodies veiled in the haze of old superstition. Echoes of Arckanum, Taake, and Panphage linger, yet Änterbila occupy a realm entirely their own. Violins, bagpipes, and spectral female vocals – courtesy of Thomas von Wachenfeldt, Halte Galten, and Malin Runefelt – weave bright threads through the darkness.

The long Canadian winter has many voices, but few speak with the introspective clarity of Finnr’s Cane. Emerging from the icy expanse of Sudbury, Ontario, the duo’s self-titled fourth album is a meditation on transition: the slow dying of autumn, the silence of snowfall, and the liminal space between nature and civilisation.

Though rooted in atmospheric black metal, Finnr’s Cane forgo many of the genre’s conventions. There is no bass guitar; instead, low-end warmth and mournful resonance are carried by cello and keyboard, lending the music an organic, almost spectral quality. Rather than follow rigid structures, their songs unfold through improvisation, guided by mood and instinct.

Comparable in spirit to acts like Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch, and Fen, Finnr’s Cane tread a kindred path but speak in a voice entirely their own – one that has resonated since their 2010 debut, “Wanderlust”, and continued through critically acclaimed releases on Prophecy Productions and Frostscald Records. This latest work marks their first collaboration with Nordvis, a natural home for their singular vision.

A forgotten tale, long buried beneath the snows of time, is about to be retold. “Midvintersagor” (‘Midwinter Sagas’) is the first music ever composed by Örnatorpet, a landmark in both personal and artistic discovery. Originally self-released in a small cassette run, this unaltered reissue allows listeners to experience the album exactly as it was conceived – pure, unrefined, and brimming with the wonder of creation.

At its core, “Midvintersagor” is a soundtrack to an unwritten legend. Each track weaves a narrative steeped in medieval fantasy, channelling the essence of forgotten folklore and the grandeur of winter’s stillness. Inspired by the interludes and atmospheric passages of 90s black metal, Örnatorpet sought to craft an instrumental world as evocative as the landscapes of his native Sweden.

Since its inception in 2018, Örnatorpet has become one of the foremost torchbearers of dungeon synth. With no formal musical training, he followed only instinct and inspiration, carving out a path that has since led him to the forefront of the genre. “Midvintersagor” is where that journey began – an unpolished gem gleaming with the spirit of discovery, now unearthed for a new audience to behold.

“Om jordens blod och urgravens grepp” (‘Of earth’s blood and the grave’s grasp’) is a powerful blend of black metal, folk, and atmospheric darkness, interwoven with classical and progressive influences. Traditional instruments such as the violin, viola, willow flute, and hand drum infuse the music with ancient, primal energy. The lyrics, crafted through subconscious writing, serve as a conduit to the mystical and otherworldly.

The album was engineered, produced, and mixed by Oraklet. Drums were recorded at Nordvis Ljudstudio, with the remaining tracks laid down at Studio HMH. Mastering was handled by Tore Stjerna at Necromorbus Studio.

Founded in 2015 in the northernmost part of Scandinavia, Häxkapell is the creation of Oraklet, who embarked on an inward journey to explore the philosophical, spiritual, and mystical aspects of existence. Following the 2016 demo “Om sanningen,” Häxkapell released their debut album, “Eldhymner”, in 2021.

It reflects the cycle of birth and bereavement, with death and life beginning anew as earthen folk melodies murmur ancient slumbers into dawn.
